How Smoking Can Ruin Your Teeth & Gums

Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health! This warning can be found on many cigarette packs and cannot be reiterated enough. The trouble with smoking is that it doesn’t only harm the lungs but the mouth as well.
Each time you smoke, you increase the chances of you acquiring mouth cancer.
At each breath, nicotine and carbon monoxide enters the inner structure of the mouth and gets exposed to the dangers of cancer because of cell damage.
Malignant cells increase and metamorphose into other gum disease-causing substances.


Gum diseases because of smoking

Smoking does not cause cavity formation. It does not cause a tooth decay to worsen either. However, it is a major culprit in the advancement of gum diseases such as:

Gingivitis – an inflammation of the gums where the gums become tender and prone to bleeding at the slightest pressure when brushing or flossing.

Peritonitis – a more severe case of gingivitis that has gotten worse because of continued smoking. It affects the bones and other tissues in the mouth and could lead to other worse forms of gum disease. A diseased gum often leads to loss of teeth.

Smoking exposes the teeth to nicotine, the primary component of cigarettes. This causes rougher surface on the teeth in which plaque could hold fast promoting a buildup. In as short as one day, plaque could turn to tartar. Tartar on teeth is extremely unattractive and increases the risks of gum disease.

Can tobacco-chewing be an option?
The most ideal thing to do is to give up smoking completely. Others who just cannot kick the habit resort to chewing tobacco. This option does not guarantee that a person may be spared from contracting smoking-related diseases.

Large amounts of nicotine are still present therefore the risks of gum damage including oral cancer are still high.
Because nicotine is present in the mouth, it could blend into the saliva and may be swallowed. This exposes the person to more health risks.
Most tobaccos have sugar content for added flavor which may cause cavities and tooth decay.

Kick the habit – it’s the only solution!
The sooner you kick the habit, the better. In fact, it is the only solution to avoid gum diseases caused by smoking. It doesn’t matter if you have been smoking for a long time, it is never too late to quit.
